Sauna and Your Health

The effects of the sauna on health are very personal. As a rule, everybody can safely enjoy the sauna if they feel ok about it. Some additional care should be taken if the bather has a history of low blood pressure or is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, since these can strengthen the effects of the sauna.

Saunas cleanse and rejuvenate skin. A radiant and pink skin become a reality. Mental and physical relaxation is also a major benefit of sauna use. In addition, saunas relax sore muscles and help in relieving stress and tension. The sauna also improves one's immune system, metabolic rate and circulation. Arthritis patients can benefit temporarily by taking sauna baths.

During a sauna bath, natural chemicals (Norepinephrines and Beta Endorphins) are released to relieve pain. Saunas help in burning sizeable amounts of calories. Also, the combination of low humidity and high temperature helps in cleansing ones pores thoroughly by increasing perspiration.

Saunas create a condition of fever, which activates all organs of the body. It is a cure for headaches and common cold. Saunas promote sweating. Sweating is as essential as breathing and eating. Sweating cleanses, removes body waste and regulates body temperature. Sweating is very limited or non-existent in many as they live a sedentary life.

In summary, saunas have numerous health benefits. However, there are health risks of using saunas for some individuals so caution must be exercised.

Detoxification & skin cleaning
Slimming & weight control
Muscle & joint pain relief
60 minute massage then 30 minutes steam. A Great combination of outstanding relaxation.

Sweating helps rid the body of wastes, regulates body temperature, and invigorates our largest organ, the skin.

Directions for using a sauna:

bulletEnter the sauna slowly and start on the lower settings and work your way up to the upper settings as you get accustomed to the heat.
bulletThe temperature range is usually 155°-195°F (70°-90° C). Some experienced sauna users can take it right up to the boiling point of water. The goal is to sweat freely but not feel faint or ill.
bulletThe heat stage can last for any length of time you are comfortable with. Most often it is upwards of 20 minutes and unless you are a very seasoned sauna user less than 40 minutes.
bulletWhenever you move in the sauna you should get up slowly to avoid feeling light-headed. Blood Pressure is typically lowered in a sauna due to the expanded blood vessels.

Directions for using a sauna: Final cool down

bulletThe ideal situation is to shower or rinse off with soap and cool water. This will clean your skin, close your pores and slow the sweating.
bulletCooling off slowly is now the name of the game instead of the Polar Bear routine.
bulletAir drying works better than toweling off since you will continue to sweat for some time still.
bulletReclining for 10 or 15 minutes is the preferred method to finish up and get ready to face the real world once again. This is why it is so nice to have a changing/relaxing area adjacent to your sauna.
bulletIt’s time to replenish your fluids. You loose about 1 quart of water each hour in a sauna. Water is fine but many people prefer juice or one of the power drinks since you loose vitamins and minerals along with the water.
bulletAfter you wash down the sauna and leave the door open to dry you are done.

Pregnancy
Pregnant mothers should probably not start taking saunas.

Sport injuries:
One no-no is treating injuries in the sauna. Muscle and tissue injuries should be treated with cold, compression and elevation first. Heat therapy can be applied after two days' healing.
